The long-awaited Shostakovich Symphonies by Bulgaria's leading conductor, Emir Tabakov, are now available in a boxed set. Looking back at the way the symphonies have been released so far (4, 8, 7, 11, 13, 5&6, 9&10, 3&14, 2&12, 1&15), one can sense a spiral structure, alternating the early and late symphonies with No.5 and No.6 at the core of the set. This is a kind of a spiral structure. It is not clear whether this was Tobaccoff's intention or not, but as he is also a composer, it would not be surprising if he had arranged it. The orchestra has a slightly local sound that is sure to appeal to enthusiasts, and Tobaccoff conducts with a rugged, hard-working craftsmanship that does not flatter the listener, making the complete collection a wonderful listening experience.
